Blåmes / Blu tit
For the exhibition Home sweet Home by Connie Husser Object with love at Vitra Hause.
Birdhouses have been around since ancient Egypt, where they housed pigeons and other birds. Over time, they spread across the world, each culture adapting its own style based on local needs and aesthetics.
My birdhouse is inspired by the blue tit (Parus caeruleus), a small yet bold bird found in Sweden and much of Europe. The blue tit is active and acrobatic, often seen hanging upside down while feeding. Despite its small size, it’s known for its feisty attitude, often chasing away larger birds. As a child, I found its colors and size charming, but learning about its cheeky personality made me love it even more.
This birdhouse is crafted from discarded wood, reflecting the same craftsmanship and style as my Craft Punk series. It features a cast tin detail that replicates the wood’s texture to form the bird’s entrance, along with a small tin ornament of a mini blue tit and the letter ”C,”( a subtle nod to the curator). The blue tit’s ”bandit mask” perfectly captures its sneaky habits, and, like the bird itself, this birdhouse embodies both humor and character. Through this design, I aimed to create a functional shelter that also tells the story of nature’s bold and charming little inhabitant.
